IS educational projects

Ingénierie de la Santé implements a range of educational projects actively involving both students and external professional partners.

The course's pedagogical team acts as project moderator and guide.

After Hours Innovation: The world of medical devices

On Tuesday February 2 at 5pm, the Distanciel Innovation After Hours took place. This was the 2nd edition of an event that began in 2019 at the Montpellier Faculty of Pharmacy.

In short 15-minute presentations, 3 groups of students presented their innovative projects. The first 2 groups of students specialize in DM through the Health Engineering DMCC course at the Montpellier Faculty of Pharmacy, and the3rd groupwas made up of students in their 5thyear of pharmacy industry studies.

The presentations dealt mainly with problems suffered by women: varicose veins, painful periods, and breast reconstruction after mastectomy.

The first presentation dealt with ultrasound therapy for varicose veins, without incisions or scars. Varicose veins are defined as pathological dilatation of the veins, and affect millions of people of all ages. There are several solutions currently on the market, albeit not very effective, hence the potential study of echotherapy to treat this pathology non-invasively, precisely and painlessly.

The second presentation concerned electrostimulation for painful periods. Dysmenorrhea also affects millions of women, and despite the presence of numerous drug treatments on the market, there are still many women who suffer from incapacitating pain every month. Thanks to electrostimulation, which could even be considered before drug treatment, studies show that there is a significant average reduction in menstrual pain.

Finally, it was time to talk about breast reconstruction: development using breast prosthesesby 3D printing. Breast reconstruction solutions currently on the market have major drawbacks, hence the idea of offering an alternative to patients wishing to undergo this reconstructive surgery following their battle with the disease. The 3D-printed prosthesis based on bioresorbable raw materials would generate cellular growth of a fat pedicle from the patient's armpit, and in parallel lead to the degradation of the prosthesis. In just a few months, a natural breast would be formed, with no foreign bodies remaining.

Faced with 3 health problems facing women, and in the absence of current solutions offering comprehensive care, innovative medical devices offer an interesting alternative to current treatments. Studies are currently underway for the above-mentioned DMs, and may lead to their inclusion in standard patient care, with possible reimbursement by health insurance. This underscores the growing importance of medical devices in the world of healthcare, and of course in the training of future healthcare professionals.

Monday, February 3, 2020. AFTER HOURS INNOVATION.

Under the aegis of their course leader, Mr. Xavier GARRIC, and one of their teachers, Ms. Caroline DESMETZ, students in the Master 2 DMCC course took part in the implementation of an active learning project.

Guided by their teacher, the students took advantage of the learning lab on the UFR Pharmacie premises during class time.

This room has been designed to encourage a dynamic, interactive approach to teaching in which students build and reason more independently.

After several months' work, the first "After Hours Innovation" creative conferences took place on MondayFebruary 3, 2020from5pm to 7:30pm at the Faculty of Pharmacy in Montpellier, in the presence of the President of the University of Montpellier (Philippe Augé), the Executive Director of MUSE (François Pierrot) and the Director of the Pharmaceutical and Biological Sciences UFR (Vincent Lisowski).

This first session was a resounding success, with over 150 people (students, teacher-researchers, administrative and technical staff) in attendance.

The 3 sessions (Students, Teachers-Researchers and Start-ups) gave rise to a lively exchange of views, with more than 30 questions posed by the students, in a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
